Tuesday TwitterTalk Recap – Differentiating Yourself in the MBA Application

DiversityMBAPrep.com hosted its Tuesday TwitterTalk on October 2nd on Differentiating Yourself in the MBA Application. You can download a recording of the talk from Dropbox. Here is a brief summary of the call:

Key message 1: no other #MBA applicant is like you so differentiation can’t be about being unique #diverseMBA

Key message 2: #MBA Differentiation = fitting in to the school profile, while standing out in being authentically you #diverseMBA

  • Differentiation #1: determine what #MBA school wants to know and what they value in applicants #diverseMBA <<This helps you to determine the parts of your brand and your story that are most effective to highlight. You have limited space in the application to differentiate yourself so focus on the most topics that are most important to the Admissions Committee.>>
  • Differentiation #2: define what you want from #MBA and what you bring to an #MBA program #diverseMBA <Self-awareness is key. Know how an MBA can help you achieve your goals. And also how you will contribute to an MBA program as a student and as an alumnus.>>
  • Differentiation #3: Showcase your #MBA personal brand at every touch point – leverage every opportunity #diverseMBA <<The application is just one touch point; other interactions include emails and phone correspondence, networking events, webinar participation and the questions you ask>>
  • Differentiation #4: Do the little things to stand out – follow-up, respect for people and their time, prepare #diverseMBA <<Sweat the small stuff. From ensuring that you have no typos in your application to sending thank you notes to people who help you through the application process – the little things matter. If you handle yourself well during the application process, you are likely to handle yourself well in the recruiting process when you are an MBA student.>>
